The Coral is among the few places I can go to in NYC and feel like I'm getting my money's worth. As a rule, they do a good and honest job in the kitchen, and the wait staff does a good and honest job up front. The downstairs has reverted to a take-out operation, but their upstairs is a very pleasant restaurant & bar. Service is slower during the breakfast and lunchtime hours, but with good reason. The food is good, the price is right, and probably about 75% of their business is before 3pm. I'm a regular there during the dinner hours, where the wait staff is very pleasant and efficient; the food is well prepared; and it's not frightfully raucous or noisy. Ultimately, it's a neighborhood place - a diner that does a bit more than just diner fare.
