Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, Dance Theatre of Harlem was considered "one of ballet's most exciting undertakings" (The New York Times, 1971). Now in its fourth decade, Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multi-cultural dance institution with an extraordinary legacy of providing opportunities for creative expression and artistic excellence that continues to set standards in the performing arts. The School

Dance Theatre of Harlem School (DTHS) is a cultural, social, and educational institution committed to providing young people of diverse backgrounds with an opportunity to receive training in classical ballet and the allied arts.

Throughout their training at DTHS students receive onsite physical therapy, nutrition and wellness workshops made possible through a partnership with The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries. These classes also engage the parents because they are a significant component in any student's progress. Our commitment to prepare our young people for respective career choice includes a series of diction classes. This comprehensive program is designed to instill discipline, heighten self-esteem and encourage creativity while enabling students to reach their full potential and excel in their chosen endeavors.
