Claremont Neighborhood Centers, Inc. is a not-for-profit, multi-service center that serves the Morrisania/Claremont area of the South Bronx. We are a financially sound, grass-roots organization, providing and developing social services, recreational and educational programs that will foster and enhance greater cultural and socio-economic participation for children and adults in and around the Claremont community and the South Bronx.
Claremont Neighborhood Centers, Inc., maintains memberships with the United Neighborhood Houses of New York, Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, Day Care Council, New York State Association of Settlement Houses, Association of Bronx Settlement Houses, Associated Black Charities and Small Settlement House Collaborative. Claremont administers the following programs and services:
ALEENE LOGAN PRE-SCHOOL CENTER AND LOUIS A. FICKLING DAY CARE CENTER
Funded by the Agency for Child Development and the United States Department of Agriculture. The center serves approximately 120 pre-school children in educational programs from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
This program is designed to prepare young boys to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling values related to the Scout Oath and Law.
CLAREMONT SUMMER DAY CAMP
The day camp provides safe, structured recreation, trips and activities for children aged six through twelve years who do not leave the city for the summer. The day camp is a seven-week fun filled program. Its only financial assistance is the nominal fee that is paid by the parents. Day camp hours are from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. This is a traveling day camp when weather permits. Campers go on excursions to State Parks, Museums and other places of interest.
CLAREMONT YOUTH AND ADULT CENTER
Supported in part by the Bronx Borough President's Office and the New York City Housing Authority, this component provides General Education, Counseling, Civic and Recreational services for the center's youth and adult population.
DRAMA WORKSHOP
* The objective of this program is to:
* Act as a foundation for the children's creative expressions.
* Promote and maintain teamwork amongst staff and students.
* Assist the literacy needs of each student through theatrical components.
* Support students' creative ideas into a final presentation for the family, friends, and staff of Claremont.
EDUCATIONAL LEARNING CENTER AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
Provides escort, tutoring, educational counseling and homework assistance services to school age children between the ages of six and thirteen from five area local schools and parochial schools. This program works in conjunction with District #9 School Board, serving approximately 100 youths, parents and guardians.
EXERCISE & HEALTH MAINTENANCE
This eight-week program meets three days a week and is designed to help participants lose weight, increase stamina, strengthen the body, increase endurance and make the body more flexible.
FRESH AIR FUND
Supported by the New York Fresh Air Fund, this seasonal program registers approximately 530 youth to be placed for ten days in Friendly Town or outdoor camps.
GIRL SCOUTS OF AMERICA
This program is designed for girls 6-16 years of age, instilling respect as well as survival techniques. They go on educational trips and are monitored in school. They are also counseled on a weekly basis.
KARATE
The Karate Program is presented to youth aged four through eighteen and adults nineteen years and above. The objective is to instill self-respect, self-control, self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership qualities.
LATE NIGHT PROGRAM
Funded through the office of the Bronx Borough President, this program extends recreation to 11:30 P.M., three evenings per week. Recreation consists of basketball, pool, ping-pong, weight lifting, rap sessions and short-term counseling.
NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS
Provides support to members who are addicted to drugs. This twelve-step program provides group support, guidance and strength.
PROJECT AJPHA (Acquiring Jobs To Promote Higher Aspirations)
Project AJPHA is a career development program assisting community residents in becoming self-sufficient individuals through skills building workshops and identifying personal, vocational and educational goals and pursuits. Services include job resource information/counseling, education assistance, health awareness and information/referrals for participants 16 years and over.
SISTAZ UNITED
Strength Improving & Substaining Tactical Awareness & Performance for Zealous Young Women
The mission of SISTAZ is to promote positive behavior and healthy practices among young women through mentoring, guided workshops with accredited professional, counseling, and positive reinforcement.
SUBSTANCE AND DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION AND EDUCATION
Funded by the DYCD, this program provides counseling services and workshops in areas related to drug prevention, with special emphasis on teaching teens through preventive education.
